The upsides and downsides of digital technologies

Led by L. Todd Rose

It seems clear that digital technologies will play an increasingly influential role in learning and education in the coming years. What is much less clear is whether this is a good thing or not. On the one hand, digital technologies provide us with perhaps the best opportunity to re-imagine the foundation of education such that learning becomes at once more personalized, equitable, and cost-effective. On the other hand, it’s just as easy to imagine the same digital technologies used in a way that diminishes the role of the educator, exacerbates existing inequalities, and in a way that is more expensive in the long run. In this session we will focus on both the upsides and downsides of digital technologies in education, and how the notion of “learning design” can help educators and curriculum developers to leverage the power of technology as a force for genuinely positive change.
